History
The Bob Richmond Memorial Trophy
In February 1993, the Sydenham Community Curling Club, and the All Ontario Farmers Bonspiel lost a good friend when Bob Richmond passed away. In order to remember Bob, and recognize his contributions to this bonspiel, we have dedicated the All Ontario Farmers Bonspiel Trophy to his memory.
The Provincial Farmers Curling Championship was created in 1986 by a group of curling farmer members of the Sydenham Community Curling Club. At the time many local curling clubs would host one day farmers bonpiels in the area. Their vision was to create a 3 day weekend event to draw together farmers from across the province, provide them with plenty of opportunity for fellowship, recreation and some good curling as well as financial support for the curling club.
The bonspiel was a huge success after only 2 years. It became an official sanctioned event of the Ontario Curling Association with 32 teams participating from across the province. In 1990, the Ontario Curling Association wanted to move the event to other curling clubs across the province. The Sydenham Community Curling Club could not afford to lose the revenues from such an event thus the All-Ontario Farmers Cash and Product Bonspiel was formed.
Over the 35 years the bonspiel was convened by many chairs and committee members along with volunteers of the curling club. Many thanks goes to all of them for organizing such a premier curling event in the province. Past Chairs and members to be recognized for their many contributions include
Rosaire Cartier, Dick Roe, Bob Richmond, Bob Dekoning, Dave Rose, Harry Courtis, Mark Delange, Mary McGregor, Gale and Nigel Steadman and Jeff Rosseel.
In 2014, a new committee was established to bring new life and ideas into the bonspiel in celebration of the 30th annual in 2015. The All Ontario Farmers Bonspiel continues to be a financial success for the Sydenham Community Curling Club as well as full participation of 28 teams competing annually from across the province. Much of this success would not be possible without the sponsor support from the agri-food business along with many local community businesses.
